Krisis: Poster 1994

'K R I S I S'

an installation                                                    Articles on 'Krisis'

This work was originally created for my final project back in 1994.
The title 'Krisis' means 'Crisis' in English.

It consists of about 86 pieces of painstakingly handcrafted translucent
ceramic pieces carefully set in a darkened room.

Some of them were hung from the ceiling by means of transparent thread
so they looked as if they were floating in the air. Shafts of light shone
through them. Other were set upon low black pedestals with flickering
light underneath. The light revealed the translucent delicate
layered surface details of the porcelain pieces.

As a final project for my Bachelor of Arts degree, it received
the never-before-given mark of 'A-Plus'.

It was first exhibited in October 1994 in Soemardja Gallery
of Bandung Institute of Technology, Bandung, Indonesia
as part of 'October Forum', an art festival for young artists.

Krisis: Floating

An improved version was then reconstructed for a solo exhibition in
Cipta III Gallery, Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta, Indonesia in November 1995.

Krisis: Flickering Light

Many has expressed their observations and experience with this work;
how it has evoked certain feelings and thoughts in them.
It was surprising and touching at the same time to see how deep
this work has moved some of the audience, how far it has probed into
their personal reflections, and how differ their perceptions about it sometimes.

I'm humbly mentioning here that most of them agreed about one thing:
It was a new, impressive experience for them.
Some were scared of the dark 'though... ;-)

You can read some excerpts of the visitors comments
as written in the exhibition's guestbooks here.
